Observation Deck
The Donauturm (Danube Tower) was opened in April 1964 on the occasion of the Vienna International Garden Show (WIG 64) and has since been one of Vienna’s most distinctive landmarks. With a height of 252 metres, it remains the tallest structure in Austria and a significant example of modern engineering of the 20th century.
The tower was designed by Viennese architect Prof. Hannes Lintl, who drew inspiration from international television towers while deliberately conceiving the Donauturm as a publicly accessible observation tower. Completed in just under two years, the reinforced concrete structure combines technical innovation, functionality and a clear architectural form. Since its opening, the Donauturm has shaped Vienna’s skyline and stands as a symbol of progress, optimism and the city’s international outlook.
Observation Decks & Experience
The observation levels of the Donauturm are located at approximately 150 metres above ground and are easily accessible via modern high-speed lifts. They offer an impressive 360-degree panoramic view over Vienna, the Danube, the Marchfeld region and, on clear days, as far as the Alps and Bratislava.
Visitors have access to both an open-air outdoor terrace and a glazed indoor terrace, which can be enjoyed year-round regardless of weather conditions. This combination allows for a flexible and comfortable viewing experience in every season.
A special highlight is the Danube Tower Slide, opened in 2023 and regarded as the highest slide in Europe. Starting at around 165 metres, it spirals down along the tower. The fully enclosed stainless-steel slide, measuring over 40 metres in length, combines panoramic views, movement and excitement, adding a contemporary and innovative attraction to the classic observation experience.
The experience is further enhanced by the Tower Café and the rotating Tower Restaurant, which together create a unique blend of views, architecture and memorable experiences high above the city.
