不明飞行物 布拉迪斯拉发 celebrates 54 years as one of the most recognizable landmarks above the Danube. On August 26, 1972, an extraordinary new landmark officially became part of Bratislava’s skyline.

The SNP Bridge, Most Slovenského národného povstania, was inaugurated on the 28th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising. Rising above the Danube, the bridge was unlike anything Bratislava had seen before: an ambitious, asymmetric cable-stayed structure crowned by a distinctive spaceship-shaped tower.

Today, we know it simply as the UFO Bratislava.

A bold idea above the Danube

Construction began in 1967, following designs by architects including J. Lacko and A. Tešár and their team of architects and engineers.

The project was one of the most ambitious construction projects of its era. The resulting bridge became Slovakia’s first asymmetric, single-pylon, cable-stayed bridge and, at the time, only the second bridge of its kind in the world.

The innovative engineering later influenced other bridge projects, including the Vanšu tilts in Riga.

The distinctive UFO structure sits atop the bridge’s 95-meter pylon, creating one of the most recognizable silhouettes in Bratislava.

From Bystrica Café to UFO

Although the bridge was inaugurated in 1972, construction of the entire structure continued until 1974.

That year, the Bystrica Café opened at the top of the pylon. For almost three decades, it was a popular destination for family gatherings, romantic dinners and, of course, spectacular views over Bratislava.

In 2003, a major reconstruction began. Two years later, the observation deck opened to the public in its modern form, beginning a new chapter in the story of the landmark.

95 meters above Bratislava

Today, the UFO offers a 360° panorama from 95 meters above the city.

From the observation deck, visitors can look across the Danube towards Bratislava Castle, the historic centre, St. Martin’s Cathedral and the surrounding landscape. On a clear day, visibility can extend for more than 100 km.

The experience is about more than just looking out over the city, though. The UFO is also home to a restaurant 和 bar, making it possible to enjoy Bratislava from above over a meal, coffee, cocktail or sunset drink.

And then there’s Skywalk…

For anyone who thinks a 360° observation deck isn’t quite enough adrenaline, there’s Skywalk.

The seasonal attraction takes visitors beyond the windows and onto the outer ledge of the observation tower, accompanied by a professional instructor.

At around 85 meters above the ground, participants walk around the outside of the dome with nothing but the spectacular Bratislava panorama surrounding them.

Let’s just say: the view is incredible. The ground is very far away.

A landmark that became a symbol

Over the past 54 years, the UFO has become inseparable from Bratislava.

It began as part of a groundbreaking bridge project, evolved from a beloved café into a modern observation and dining destination, and has become one of the most recognizable symbols of the Slovak capital.

Today, it offers visitors a chance to experience Bratislava from an entirely different perspective, from above the Danube, beneath the unmistakable UFO silhouette.
